Wine is often referred to as “the elixir of life” in books that date back to the earliest times. There is some truth to this saying, especially for red wines that are considered to be good for your heart. From top-tier athletes like NBA’s Lebron James to Hollywood actors like Mark Wahlberg, red wine is one of the preferred choices of alcohol for people who care for their bodies. This is thanks to the fact there is science and reports to back up the claims that drinking wine in moderation is good for you.

Is Wine Really Good for Your Heart?

Drinking a glass of red wine is thought of as heart-healthy because it increases the intake of polyphenols, which are micronutrients. The polyphenols are directly associated with a reduced risk of CVD (cardiovascular disease). The micronutrients will protect the lining of the blood vessels in the heart and improve the overall blood flow.

Another important health benefit that comes with drinking wine is a decrease in LDL (low-density lipoprotein) which is commonly known as bad cholesterol. Cholesterol leads to arterial damage, and by having good cholesterol, you are reducing the chances of encountering heart disease.

Increasing Life Span

While most people drink wine because of its flavor, others choose to drink it to increase their life span. A study performed by Harvard shows that another polyphenol named resveratrol can be found in wine. This is a compound that is known for protecting the heart and working as an anti-aging supplement. This all was proven through mice research. The antioxidants and polyphenols will help the body regenerate healthy cells.

Resveratrol can also be found in grape skins, especially in reds. So, you can basically get the same health benefits by eating grapes or drinking grape juice. However, we think it’s safe to say that choosing a chilled glass of red wine is a better alternative.

Moderation is Key

While having a glass or two of wine per day can help your heart, things will not go well if you don’t consume the delicious beverage in moderation. It’s important to drink moderate amounts of alcohol, all alcohols and not only wine because you will have a lower risk of encountering any health problems. In fact, experts advise you to either drink in moderation or not at all if you care about your health.

Health Benefits that Wine Brings

Below you can find a shortlist of health benefits that drinking wine in moderation brings:

  • It can protect the lining of the blood vessels in the heart;
  • It improves blood flow;
  • It helps prevent artery damage that is caused by cholesterol;
  • It helps increase HDL cholesterol, which is good for your health;
  • It reduces the overall formation of blood clots.

Side note: We want to mention that if you have any questions about the benefits and risks of drinking alcohol, it’s always best to ask your doctor. There are health conditions and medicaments that don’t react well to alcohol.
